I Heard the Woods Turn

      I Heard the Woods Turn

I heard the woods turn color today,
at dawn, as the feeble fall sun crawled its way
over the chilly night.

It sang a chorale in the key
of yellow, each tree's tone distinct,
but layered and woven
one into the other -

the lemony birch and pale, airy aspen
winding their melodies around
the beech's golden-bronze, the brown oak's
baritone droning softly -

in a visual harmony, hues shifting
as the trees swayed, each joyful
in its own song.

I watched them all morning,
these trees, swaying and singing,
shaking free their notes to tumble,
silent now, in the autumn breeze,

turning over and over and over,
falling, finally, as vivid splashes
onto the waiting canvas of the forest floor.

Lovely poem and really captures what is happening around us this (my favorite) time of year.

Excellent way to capture the “polyphony” of a forest this time of year. Combining the visual sense with the auditory sense creates an unexpected insight into what it means (at least to me) to be present in Autumn.

Hi B! Huge apologies…I just read this piece…it is magnificent….the imagery beautiful and captures perfectly the experience of watching the leaves change in the forest!

I really think this is your best ever.

Thank you for continuing to create and share your work!
